EwokABdevito - Why Is Learning To Code So Hard? [tekst, tłumaczenie i interpretacja piosenki]

Tekst piosenki

My first guess is how "unapproachable" it seems. Maybe it's how foreign the symbols are, maybe it's because I have no training in mathematics. I am going to attempt to push through the discomfort and "confusion" and document my experience here.

4-17-15 Dedicating a couple hours to a python tutorial

- Still don't know where to start... Python tutorial assumes I have knowledge in coding, and "Learn Python The Hard Way" assumes I have knowledge in "Powershell". "Powershell" looks just as difficult and opaque as everything else. Where does one start?!?! Gritting my teeth and going through codecademy.... but I need something supplemental.

4-18-15 Sticking with "learn python the hard way". Installed notepad ++ and ran python through Powershell. About to make Google my best friend..

After 30 mins of growing frustration I realized I was overthinking it, then simply made a blank file and entered (dir) in powershell. Easy peasy. I have a feeling this is going to happen a lot! Lesson 1: On to Exercise 1: http://learnpythonthehardway.org/book/ex1.html#

4-21-2015

Checked out 3 books from the libraries to get more familiar with everything: "HTML, XHTML, and CSS for Dummies", "SQL for Dummies", and "Search Engine Optimization for Dummies"

4-21-15 My goal is to build a basic website today. Get familiar with HTML5 and possibly CSS.

4-23-15 Read half of Paul E. Ceruzzi's: Computing, a concise history.

4-25-15 Today I'm going to finish building my website (about half done) and then I'm gonna systematically trudge through W3CSchools.com I'm really feeling their layout and everything. Starting with HTML5, css, and js.

Due to multiple complaints against W3Schools.com I'm trying out something else.

5-8-15 Back on the grind, going through a JS tutorial.

5-9-15 Signed up for github to get my super basic site online.

Made a choose your own adventure game and almost finished a "rock, paper, scissors" game. I need these two codes to fit together.. I think I encountered a Codecademy bug.

6-13-15 I haven't given up. I've been preoccupied, but am planning a new curriculum now that my summer is free. Should be updated in the next couple of weeks.

6 - 18 - 15 I am starting anew with Ruby which I find MUCH more intuitive than any other language I've tried. I read a brilliant article and it really made me start thinking, I ran my mind into circles. Fell asleep and woke up thinking just as viciously. A friend came over for a Final Fantasy concert and we started talking about a grandiose game franchise we had wanted to make. I decided that I wanted to make something crappy and simple that could turn into that. I wanted to make some kind of Better Metro North. We kept asking with my almost 0-skill level: "what can I do NOW to make this happen?".

Initially we set up two paths of reasoning.

1.) We start making this silly game. To do that, I proposed that I could make a site; learn how to display a list of 150 creature animations my friend has drawn on the computer and also make a forum to build a community around the idea. (Keeping secret our "main" strategy [our end game which has massive potential])

2.) We talked about all sorts of eventual outcomes for the game and we had to figure out how to boil it down into something I could make NOW. So in a flurry of back and forths, my friend and I decided we would try making a model of the game where "numbers" take the place of "creature cards". As soon as I wrote out 1-9 for both players in relation to our 3 x 3 grid I realized I needed it bigger, but THEN when I wrote out a 9x9 the game just came to me and I asked Josh if he wanted to play (of course I smoked him because I invented the game lol).

I'm going with option 2.)

Here is the gist of the skeleton of our game idea (We have a very very different "end game" idea, but it's "skeleton" is a unique and fun game in itself, comparable to tic-tac-toe cubed. Better yet, I think I can have it done in two weeks at my completely novice skill level.

Try this yourself it's simple and fun:

Draw a grid with 18 squares (draw two 3x3's next to each other if you're having trouble; so it ends up being 3x6)

Rules: Each player has numbers 1-9 as their tokens.

- The goal of the game is to have the highest number dominating as many rows as possible (on an x and y axis).

- Each player may only use each number once

- A row with two equally high numbers neutralizes itself

- At the end, the rows are tallied up horizontally and vertically. So there are 9 possible rows to capture.

(These are the simple rules, I also have rules for medium + advanced)

The resulting game is quite interesting, logically closing off options as it goes, and not taking much longer than a normal game of tic-tac-toe. I think it's ingenious, PLEASE let me know if anyone has heard of it before :)

6 - 25 - 15: Finished the Codecademy Ruby course. Now I'm starting Ruby on Rails!

6 - 28 - 15 Abandoned the codecademy course after repeated bugs with the command line. A friend sent me a digital copy of Michael Hartl's "Ruby On Rails Tutorial". I'm exactly halfway through Chapter 1 and everything is going smoothly, except I'm having a little trouble figuring out how to use the text editor (Sublime text 2). Everything is installed properly so I'm going to go hard tomorrow and figure it out.

7 - 6 - 15 Have my Github up with my crappy little website and non-functioning rails "Hello world!" site. Almost ready for the fun stuff!

7 - 12 - 15 Visited friend's professional coder brother! Here's my takeway.

7 - 13- 15 POUNDING MY HEAD AGAINST A WALL!!

7 - 18 -15 Found an excellent middleground. Will start first js project pretty soon. Learning from "Eloquent Javascript".
