It Gets Better Project

The “It Gets Better” internet-based project and charitable organization was founded on December 10, 2010 by Don Savage, a syndicated columnist and author, and Terry Miller. To help gay youth realize that in the face of bullying it can get better, and to inspire hope when facing harassment, they posted YouTube videos in May 2011. They also used other media resources in order to reach a wider audience and convey their message of hope (through MTV, Logo, or radio stations)
The project was triggered by the suicide of Billy, who was called “fag” multiple times by his classmates at school. The 15 year-old freshman in a high school in Indiana hanged himself in his barn, and was found by his mother the next day. A number of similar cases involving the suicide of a gay teen show that this is a widespread phenomenon, and have lead to the creation of Dan Savage’s project
They direct a message not only to the LGBT population, but to the entire nation, saying we should accept differences in a diverse community. If we are not ready to welcome differences, then we don’t build a community in a friendly and inclusive way. The founders of the project invite us to support the project by donating. recording, sharing our story, pledging, wearing, buying, sharing their book and staying connected
